Prince of Wales Athletics Team

At Apii Te Uki Ou we take part in as many school and inters-school sporting opportunities as possible.

As a whole school we hold these events throughout the year:

  • Triathlon
  • Athletics
  • Swimming

In Term 1 our Year 5 to Year 8 classes do the Learn to Sail Programme in the beautiful Muri lagoon at ‘Sails’ with the Rarotonga Sailing Club. Often many of our students go on to sail for the club on Saturdays and from this they can be selected to represent the RSC in tournaments in Aitutaki, New Zealand and can progress as high as representing the Cook Islands internationally.

Our Year 7 & 8 Seniors also compete in the Vaka Iti paddling competition in the Under 14 grade and have access to coaching from some of Rarotonga’s top paddlers…lucky kids!

Soccer also runs over Term 1 with a tournament for Year 5 to Year 8 being held at the Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA).

In Term 2 a Rippa Rugby & Netball tournament is held for Year 4 to Year 8. This day is always popular and the competition is strong but always friendly amongst the various schools.

Term 3 is the largest sporting event on the Rarotongan calendar with the Prince of Wales Athletics Competition. The top students from Year 1 to Year 8 take part in this special day at BCI Stadium. This day always begins with the team march by, a hot contested event even before the athletics events begin.

Term 4 is the inter-school swimming sports and opportunities again for our Year 7 & 8’s to participate in the annual enrichment options programme that varies each year.

Outside of school students can join local clubs and play rugby, cricket, touch, rugby league, netball, soccer, tennis, golf, motor-cross, martial arts, triathlons, hash house harriers and most sports.

New families to Rarotonga find this a great way to meet friends and see how much Cook Islanders love their sport!
